The main character of the film imagines an ideal world where the worries of so-called ordinary life do not exist. However, the resulting social isolation has prompted the character to imagine companions who don't really exist. A person trapped in an ideal world imagines himself as a fairy-tale character sleeping in a high pile of mattresses, but instead of being comfortable, his sleep is disturbed by the peas hidden between the mattresses. Is “Somnium” a dream or a sleep-like waking world?
